To the average omnivore, “vegan” is not usually synonymous with “tasty” – which is why we were so delighted to come upon Hot Beans, a delicious vegan taco and burrito take-out joint in Kensington Market.
Hardcore meat-eaters will love the TVP burrito ($8.50), a hefty wheat wrap filled with spicy chunks of textured vegetable protein, rice, salsa, cashew sour cream, lettuce and chipotle sauce. We had a hankering for something sweet rather than spicy, though, and the jackfruit taco ($8.50), dressed with the house-made BBQ sauce, hit the spot. (On the side, we opted for the chips and salsa, but we hear that the coleslaw is to die for.)
As for bevvies, we couldn’t get enough of their signature limeade ($2.50), a blend of lime juice and unrefined brown sugar — perfect for a warm spring day.
Our only regret? Not getting our hands on a doughnut ($2). Flavours rotate daily, but include lime coconut, chocolate dip and caramel glaze, to name just a few. Tip: Pop in early; the doughnuts typically sell out by late afternoon.
Yes, vegan and delicious can indeed go hand in hand.
