Picnics in the park usually involve burgers and buns, not house-smoked salmon and quinoa dumplings.
Open daily for lunch, dinner and snacks, Espace La Fontaine – tucked inside Montreal’s beloved La Fontaine park – offers fresh and innovative cuisine with nary a hot dog in sight (OK, there is one gourmet “chien-chaud” on the menu, $12).
We tried the soup of the day ($3.50), a lovely gazpacho of coconut milk, tomato, melon and red peppers. The Vegetarian ($13) was light and refreshing: beets and goat cheese paired with lentil mushroom phyllos. We loved the just-sweet-enough lemonade ($2.75) and we’ll return to sample the eatery’s selection of wine, beer and aperitifs.
Good news for us; sad news for our picnic baskets.
