It's all Greek to Us
KokkinoMontreal
(Aug.08.08)
After divine dining in Greece, we’ve been dreaming up ways to recreate the experience. (Thus far, our kitchen skills haven’t cooperated.)
So imagine our delight when we discovered Kokkino, where a baklava can rival any from the old country.
This Greek pastry shop, with both indoor and outdoor seating, is spacious and inviting. We ordered at the counter, where fresh salads ($4.75 for 4 choices) and savouries like tiropita cheese pasty ($2.75) kept calling to us. (No interpreter required.)
We dove into the spanakopita ($3.75), fillo sheets stuffed with spinach and a delicate, flavourful feta cheese. The vegetarian quiche ($3.50) was bursting with mushroom, zucchini, and tomato goodness. And salads like mandarin couscous and chickpea curry simply vanished.
As for dessert ($1.25-$2.50), we couldn’t decide between the kourabiethes (almond cookies), baklava (oozing with honey) and the walnut and honey cookies that graced the display along with other scrumptious-looking sweets. So they all emigrated home to our countertop.
Until we can make it back to Athens, this new spot will fill in nicely. Who knew that staying home could be so sweet?
