Ambient Bar Hits the Old Port

taverne gaspar opensMontreal (Oct.18.11)

Any restaurant that hangs a giant bottle opener instead of signage is worth investigating.

At the very least, the beer is likely to be decent. So we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the French- and Québécois-inspired grub at new gastropub Taverne Gaspar is extremely tasty, too.

Bourbon makes an appearance in a plethora of cocktails – and in the rib eye steak ($74 for two). We scarfed down the cod fritters ($7) with aioli pimenton and the trio of meat pies ($8; the beef and blue cheese pie was divine), but lingered over the comforting macaroni and cheese ($17) with smoked lardon in the cosy, copper tin-ceilinged space with original stone walls.

We’ll definitely be returning for further investigation.
