Old Country For Young Women
Pizzeria LibrettoToronto
(Sep.19.08)
Our Italian vocabulary is limited but we've so far gotten by just fine on "Armani," "lasagna" and "gelato."
Thanks to Pizzeria Libretto, a new restaurant on Ossington (the new College), we know some new words all about old ways: Denominazione di Origine Protetta.
The phrase translates to "Protected Designation of Origin" and signifies the certified Neapolitan way Libretto makes their Margherita ($12) - baked for 90 seconds in a 900° wood-burning oven to ensure a blistered crust. (There's more to it, but enough tech talk.) Basically, Chef Rocco Agostino is actually making that fabled pie for all those people who like to say, "you can't get real authentic Italian pizza in Toronto."
And our Italian would be even better were it not for the cheeses we're busy devouring: Rochetta ($5); 4-year-old Parmigiano Reggiano ($6); Benedictine Blue ($6); and Chevre Noir ($6). And we can't skip the garnish on each plate: lightly pickled sweet plum with a sliver of garlic, vinegar and a touch of sugar.
Safe to say we'll be back to the old country - erm, Ossington - for more sinfully delicious food (and Italian practice) really soon.
