Cher amis: We’d love to be penning this en route to the Cote D’Azur, but at the moment we’re having trouble scrounging Skytrain fare.
Happily, now we can get our French bistro fix at 15th and Kingsway.
Les Faux Bourgeois had us at ‘Bonjour’. The latest offering from Stephan Gagnon (of Jules Bistro fame), we were drooling just looking at the menu (and the très cute servers bustling about the wood-paneled, retro-modern room speaking to each other in rapid-fire Francais).
We devoured the escargot de Bourgogne ($8), liberally laced with garlic and parsley atop toasted baguette. The salade des Faux Bourgeois ($10) offered a modern take on a niçoise with multi-coloured fingerling potatoes, heirloom tomatoes and local albacore tuna – punctuated with a silvery flash of fresh anchovy. Canard confit ($15) translated into crispy duck leg atop tangy port wine jus, dotted with tiny islands of creamy chevre.
And no French resistance here: We inhaled the Michel Cluizel Milk Chocolate Mousse ($7) from a highball glass plugged with a dense raft of whipped cream.
If only we could figure out how French women don’t get fat…
