Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
(Except from November through March, when we sit comfortably indoors and avoid winter).
And now that Le Petit Castor has opened its swank doors in Rosedale, we’re cozying up to (and with) all things Canadian—not to mention delicious. With sleek brown leather banquettes, lux chandeliers and more Canadiana than you can shake a lacrosse stick at, we were more than happy to hibernate with their Haute-Canada cuisine and cocktails.
Tucking into Velvety Squash and Birch Syrup Soup ($8), we instantly adored the smooth yet woodsy flavours. And we consider the Mac and Cheese with Beef Brisket ($12) our perfect hearty winter meal. Pair it with a side of Brussels Sprouts and Bacon ($5) and we may just have discovered Canada’s newest national treasure.
But who could resist the fun and clever drink list (with more than a dash of Canuck wit laced through it)? To toast being toasty, we settled on the Louis Riel cocktail ($10)—a tropical blend of tequila and grapefruit soda. But we would stage our own rebellion for a Burnt Apple Martini ($10) with Calvados and apple brandy (which definitely puts the “eh” back in classy).
True patriot love indeed.
