Whether it’s a new hairstyle from a trendy salon or shopping for a new wardrobe, it’s always nice to treat ourselves to a makeover. We’re still ourselves…only better.
The same applies to real life. Example? A visit to the completely overhauled and newly-rechristened Chesterfield – Bar à Vin (formerly Sofa Lounge). Goodbye, dingy sofas and dark, cave-like setting. Hello, full-length windows, cozy banquettes and remarkable 19th century portraits lining the walls.
We arrived for the 5 à 7, just in time to sample the free hors d’oeuvres (Thursdays and Fridays). The pan de tomates (bruschetta) was so good, we ordered it in appetizer-form ($4). We savoured a salad of mackerel with chick peas, tomatoes and olives ($10), served in an oversized shot glass, while the enchanting cheese fondue ($12) arrived in a tiny witch’s cauldron.
But it’s the wine we came to sample, and sommelier Eric Tomassen has grouped his wines by style, not by region, so it’s much easier to find what we’re looking for. We chose a glass of the Argentinean Los Cardos Chardonnay 2006 ($7) from the “Aromatic and Perfumed” white section, and a divine Corte Giara Valpollicella ($10) from the “Fruity and Fresh” red.
With the same cool music, chill vibe and affordable Mediterranean fare, it’s good to know that Chesterfield is still a comfy old sofa at heart.
