Speed walking across town to the AMC Forum, we were distracted by the grumbling in our tummies. The screening started at 7pm and there was no time for a sit-down meal. Did it mean another popcorn dinner, washed down with a soft drink?
Heck no! We ducked into Buns, the new burger joint on St. Catherine Street West, and ordered takeout. This isn’t a chic bistro with 20 kinds of designer mustards, but the hamburgers are delicious, juicy and fresh off the grill. The perfect alternative to a slice of pizza or a bowl of noodles (and much easier to sneak into the cinema).
While the 100% beef patties ($4 each, tax included) left us raving about their BBQ flavour, the potato bags ($2 each) nearly stole the show. (They’re thin wedges of seasoned-then-grilled potatoes, served in a paper bag – just ignore the grease.) Another winner was the sturdy and flavourful hamburger bun. It’s custom-made for the restaurant by a baker who adapted his recipe from a South American flat bread.
Heading into the Forum, we walked right pass the concession stand. The smell of popcorn was no match for our tasty and satisfying meal.
