We love getting together at the end of the week for a night out. But we’re tired of always picking the same supper spots on lower St-Laurent; over-crowded, with similar fusion fare. (Our ears and taste buds could use the break).
An evening at the stylish and spacious Macaroni Bar was in order. Serving creative contemporary Italian cuisine, the comfy banquettes and long tables encourage intimate gatherings (and lots of sharing). Though it was tricky choosing from their imaginative selection of appetizers, everyone’s favourite was the poutine di gnocchi con fromaggio St-Guillaume ($11): Delicious potato dumplings and cheese swimming in an unusual (but addictive) sweet-yet-savoury sauce.
With a name like Macaroni, we expected the pasta to be good, and the chitarra funghi con arugula e aoli ($16, thick spaghetti drizzled with oil and heaped with plenty of mushrooms) didn’t disappoint. We loved the over-sized, fluffy, thin-crust pizza topped with spinaci e ricotta ($16). And the chocolate soufflé with peanut butter centre ($7) was pure decadence. (Reese’s Pieces, eat your heart out.)
Sipping on our Chianti as we stared longingly out the windows at the summer patio, this is one trip ‘north’ that's definitely worth taking this winter.
