We could probably live on what we refer to as the basics: bread, cheese and coffee. In fact, we often do. Sure, it’s a diet sorely lacking in fresh fruit and veggies, but it provides the energy we need when we’re pressed for time (or too lazy to cook).
So imagine our delight when we discovered Grain, Curd and Bean, purveyor of quality espresso-based beverages and carefully selected gourmet foods, with an emphasis on bread and cheese.
We sampled, and subsequently purchased, some tangy Chevre Noir ($6.40/100 gr) and a creamy, slightly nutty Riopelle ($6.90/100 gr), both from Quebec. We also couldn’t resist leaving without the homemade garlic-dill hummus ($3.95). We also happily noted the wide variety of Fred’s Breads (from $4.75) and a small selection of oils, vinegars and other goodies.
The best part? It’s a specialty shop that encourages lingering. With milky latte in hand ($3.50) we took full advantage of the airy seating area, filled with natural light, exposed brick and hardwood floors. After perusing the magazines scattered around the room it only seemed natural to order another drink for the trip home.
At least that’s our excuse for the decadent hot chocolate ($3.50) that really hit the spot.
