Comfort food always conjures up memories of simple, home-cooked meals... but copper-plated high ceilings, candlelight and rich wood flooring? Not until last week, when the newest kid on the block started serving up our favourites with a dash of panache.
High-end ambiance and crowd-pleasing prices mesh flawlessly with the arrival of Résident, the immaculately decorated, hip new hangout in the Old Port.
Owners Voytek Korab and Mark Dufort (of Cobalt fame) instantly won us over with starters of Crabcakes & Siracha (spicy chilli) with Cilantro Mayo ($7) and the Résident Caesar Salad ($7/$11), with tangy Tempura Onion Rings w/ Ketchup Maison ($5) on the side.
Main dishes of Lamb Shepherd’s Pie ($15), Goulash ($14) and Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Onion Relish and Potato Salad ($12) added to the charm, but the unbelievably sumptuous Mini Thanksgiving Dinner ($18) was the ultimate indulgence. Our plate was impeccably arranged with Cornish hen, delicately spiced stuffing, a turnip soufflé, Yorkshire pudding and the tastiest mashed potatoes we’ve encountered. (Shhh, don’t tell Mom.)
Also offering cocktails and weekend brunch, Résident has redefined comfort food as we know it. (Mom’s got some serious competition on her hands.)
