Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.
Though most times we’ll settle for a good crowd and great food; both of which we’re happy to have found at Belfry Gastro House, a new pub in the downtown core.
Fashioned after Europe’s gastropubs (quick translation: a pub that serves a higher standard of fare than your traditional drinking establishment), the Belfry is a bustling friendly tavern, complete with a welcoming long bar, vintage photos and cozy little tables.
The food options run from comfort food with a twist, to the highly unusual (and un-pub like) fusion. Choose something old school like sheppard’s pie ($14.95), but smothered with a delectable smoked cheese, or the Guinness Stew ($17.95)—a goulash of lamb, potatoes, and yams slow-cooked in Guinness beer. Or go entirely anti-bar food with crispy tofu salad rolls.
And with more than 15 beers on tap and a long list of wines (like the organic Crauford “Kilt Lifter” Zinfandel), we found dozens of ways to wash down our grub.
This is one name we won’t be forgetting.
