Given our lack of Mario Batali-like skills, food usually tastes better from someone else’s kitchen, which is why we more than appreciate the home-cooked fare at The Foundation.
Don’t let its hole-in-the-wall façade fool you, because this eclectic joint at the foot of Main Street is a neighbourhood institution, giving that other infamous Vancouver vegetarian spot – ahem, the Naam – stiff competition with its inventive sustenance and alternative, groovy vibe.
Prolific quotes are scrawled on walls and candlelight burns once daylight dims, but it’s the quirky menu (complete with odd spelling) that enticed us to recline a little longer on those mismatched vinyl seats.
We dived mouthfirst into offerings from the “Bean Reinvented” (read: appetizer) and “Revolutionary Rations” (read: main course) sections of the menu. Just as the menu said they would, the Utopian Natchos (starting at $8) made everyone more than happy, and the East Van Town of black beans and bananas served on rice had our taste buds weirdly tantalized ($6.75). Dessert arrived in the form of Mango Forte ($9.75), a curiously good concoction of “brockly”, “zuke”, mango and jalapenos tossed in a coconut sauce and pasta that barely took the, er, cake over the chocolate fondue ($6.75).
It’s official – these veggies are way better than any we’ve been chopping up at home.
