When plain old meat and potatoes just won’t cut it, we head out to one of our top five favourite spots for yummy steak frites (same concept, more delicious). Paired with a great red wine and good company, nothing beats this meal.
Table 17
This East end gem serves up steak frites like no other – juicy with perfectly salted fries. (We highly recommend the side of sauce béarnaise.)
Table 17; 782 Queen St. E. (E. of Broadview Ave.); 416-519-1851; www.table17.ca; $19
Coquine
Organic flat iron steak, truffle oil and frites with parmesan cheese make this almost good enough to have for dessert (after we have it for the main too).
Coquine; 2075 Yonge St. (S of Eglinton Ave.); 416-322-6767; www.coquinerestaurant.com; $17
Abbot on the Hill
Garlic butter melting on the thick steak paired with fresh vegetables and a big purple onion makes this a well-rounded (relatively guilt-free) meal.
Abbot on the Hill; 1276 Yonge St. (at Summerhill); 416-920-9074; $18
The Beaconsfield
Although not technically ‘steak frites’, the AAA Angus steak selection on the menu served with shiraz veal reduction comes with frites as an option and is delectable enough to make this list.
The Beaconsfield; 1154 Queen St. W. (at Beaconsfield Ave.); 416-516-2550; www.thebeaconsfield.com; $25
Jules Restaurant Tarterie
A small, no-attitude French-bistro makes steak frites the way they should be made – with a side of delicious homemade mayo.
Jules Restaurant Tarterie; 147 Spadina Ave. (at Queen St. W.); 416-348-8886; $16
