After reading Nadine's blog last week, and her list of camping must-haves, I realized that I don't camp like the average person. It's strange since I grew up at camp and consider myself an outdoorsy kind of girl (I loved canoe trips and all that they entailed). Growing up a camper means you have an appreciation for the outdoors that a lot of city girls don't. You've slept on the dirt floor, bathed in a lake (or not bathed at all for a few days), gone to the bathroom in the woods (and possibly even wiped with greenery) and somehow loved every minute of it. Whether you went to camp with me (CITS of 2001) or went to camp elsewhere, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
If you think you don't like to camp, I believe you're wrong. There is a way to camp that I think everyone can truly enjoy. Since I am camping right now, I thought I would share my tips to for the best camping experience out there.
Bring Lots: The last thing you want is to be stuck outside and not have temperature appropriate clothes. As long as you aren't portaging (which I wouldn't suggest if you're not a seasoned camper), bring as much as you want. Better to be over prepared than under prepared; Thanks Mom!
UGGs: They may not be the nicest boots I own, but if they were definitely made for the woods. They are the perfect camping accessory.
Bedding: Make your bed like you would at home but warmer; air bed, flannel sheets, down duvet (there is one at Walmart for 29.99) and lots of blankets. A comfortable sleep in the wilderness is better than any sleep at home. Trust me.
Food: You can eat like a queen when your camping. Cooking things over an open fire makes them so much better; bring salmon and steak. Camping doesn't have to mean hot dogs and hamburgers every night.
Rain Gear: Rain sucks, especially when you're camping. However, the appropriate board games combined with some beverages and a tarp can make for a very enjoyable afternoon. (Rain can be beautiful as long as you're not getting soaked.)

I know camping season is almost over, but if you've never gone, take my advice and go. Once you start, you may not be able to stop.
I hope you are all enjoying your summer, I know I am.
Sam
