6pm. After spending a lovely lunch with four of my girlfriends, we left the 24th floor of Erin’s condo to head home. As soon as the elevator doors closed, there was a lot of beeping and rocking and after shakily stopping at each floor for five floors, we knew something was wrong.
Nicole shouted ‘on the ground!’ So we all quickly fell - if we did plummet the remaining 19 floors, we’d do less damage (or so we hoped) than standing. Not that we discussed this, but we all knew why we were suddenly sitting on the floor. We didn’t discuss any of the possible outcomes (until we were out) - we all knew not to.
I completely flipped my lid. While Klara was busy updating her Facebook status and texting her friends, I was sweating, anxiously fidgeting and yes, hysterically bawling my eyes out.
In the end, they had to call an elevator company, and it took about an hour for us to be rescued. The five of us each handled this differently; while Nicole was coaxing me to imagine walking on a wide, open beach and Danielle was busy filming us with her phone, I was in all senses of the word, completely hysterical. My Mother tells me this experience will make me a stronger person, and I hope she’s right. It’s been four days and although I have been taking the elevator up to the office, I try to make sure I’m not alone - that, would be a whole different ball game.
