The Future is Healthy

exercise canada (Feb.11.09)

I (like so many other suckers) made a New Year’s Resolution to get healthy. I was starting a new job, and thought it would be the perfect time to get started on developing a healthy routine. With so many gym memberships fallen by the wayside (after months upon months of the membership card gathering dust), I refused to waste any more of my hard earned money.

So, with the weather still being gross (but slowly getting better ) I began my search for an indoor, can do in my basement , type of workout. I began with a skipping rope and some Pilates bands, which were good, but the way I was using them, weren’t giving me the kind of workout I’d had before. Finally, a light bulb went off, and I remembered my friend had used something called Wii Fit, and had LOVED it.

So I began my search. My (mostly good, sometimes bad) boyfriend bought me the game and the balance board (which I had been begging for, so no need to gasp at the thought of said boyfriend implying I needed to lose weight by buying me Wii Fit) and I decided to give it a go.

I did things a little backwards; I had gotten the Wii Fit, but no Wii, which I never imagined would be a problem. However, after countless calls to EB Games, and endless treks to Best Buys and Future Shops, I realized it would be a problem. There was no Wii in sight (and apparently no idea when they would be restocked). Finally, after waiting for what seemed like forever, I got my hands on a Wii.

The first time I used Wii Fit, I was a little upset. Not because of the game itself (it really is a game, which means it’s fun) but because there is a body test which tells you your weight, your BMI and your Wii Fit age. Basically, for most of us, how unhealthy we are. But I persevered and now, am not only a fan, but an avid obsessive Wii gamer.

Wii Fit unlocked a world of opportunity (which I know Nadine has already discovered). I am now the proud owner of Dance, Dance Revolution, which like Wii Fit,  really gets you sweating (and counts the calories burned). All consoles come with Wii Sports, which includes tennis, bowling, baseball, golf and boxing, so you really never stop moving.

I never was allowed to have video games when I was a kid, which was mostly because they involved sitting on the couch for countless hours without moving (I think my parents foresaw my infinite weight battle). But now, thanks to Wii, and Wii Fit, I don’t have to be the only kid who can’t pass all the worlds in Super Mario Brothers; you can download old school games to your Wii hard drive, for when your Wii Fit has you too tired to move.

I'll let you know how it goes...
