The Wedding Years
tales from the pit canada
(Apr.20.09)
It's that time. And I'm not just talking season.
Yep, I am officially entering the wedding years. The years when most of my generation will be either getting hitched, engaged or even just talking about doing it. Women have a strange fascination with weddings. We don't get half as excited when we actually find the perfect partner, the one we want to spend the rest of our lives with; it's all about making it official, about walking down the aisle and saying I do. It's almost like we are concerned that until we do that, it's not real. It seems many of the conversations with my girlfriends turn to wedding talk. I find myself thinking of bridal parties (who would be bridesmaids, and who would take the coveted title of Maid of Honour?), guest lists, dresses, venues, what kind of ring I want and which of my friends will be first...
But what's the rush?
I think it's like a domino effect. When one person gets engaged, it gets the ball rolling. For me, I never even really thought about it until Rob's best friend got married last month (Rob was a groomsman). Then, one of my best friends/cousin got engaged on the top of the Empire State Building
(nauseatingly perfect, I know...) and now it's like I've been smacked in the face with a big white dress. This year alone, I will attend 5, at one of which I will be a bridesmaid. One of my best friends in the world recently had a party for passing her UFIE exam, and on the way out the door, my Mom asked, "Do you think he's (her boyfriend of 4 years) going to propose?" And there it was. NO, what? Propose? No, I mean maybe, I guess he could, but really? Now? All her family was going to be there, plus all her closest friends, and his immediate family...was it possible?
Turns out it wasn't, even though my Mom wasn't the only person who asked that question throughout the evening. People were thinking it, but to me, one of my best friends getting engaged didn't seem plausible. I guess that's just how it goes when you grow up. Every milestone seems foreign until you get used to it. I'm sure by the 147th time someone I know gets engaged, I won't even blink.
I recently asked my cousin what her dress looks like (she's keeping it under wraps) and finally got her to give me one word; Cinderella. That answer made me realize why we all get so caught up in weddings. Every little girl (whether you will admit to it or not) dreams of being a princess, and being a bride comes pretty darn close.
To all our fairytale endings (whether they involve a wedding or not...)
