Blame It On The Rain
Tales From The Pit canada
(Apr.27.09)
Spring has sprung, and with it comes torrential downpours with gale force winds, muddy mud rooms (or front hall, in my case) and more broken umbrellas than I can shake a broken umbrella at.
Do I sound grumpy? I don't mean to. I actually absolutely love having an excuse to eschew chores and brunch and hole up inside when it's rainy out. Especially when there's a good book involved.
Right now I have a few on the go that are keeping me dry and entertained (if not hoping for more rainy days). So, for all the bookworms out there, here's what's on my nightstand...

The Beautiful Fall: Lagerfeld, Saint Laurent and Glorious Excess in 1970's Paris
by Alicia Drake
The name says it all, doesn't it? A natural pick for anyone interested in YSL or Karl Lagerfeld (not to mention the myriad other celebs that pop up in the book), it's a thorough accounting of two legendary designers, friends and competitors. And you're privy to great quotes from the masters themselves -- like Karl Lagerfeld's hilarious description of his younger self: "When I was really very, very young, I was very lazy and I was so tacky: I used to like convertible cars, beaches and sunbathing, body-building and nightclubs". Amazing.

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
by Michael Pollan
WARNING: This will change the way you think about food, if not the way you eat. This isn't Pollan's latest book, it's actually a couple years old. But it's an enlightening look into the food industry in America (and by extension, Canada) and an in-depth, no holds barred unveiling of how food from the farm becomes the food on our tables. In some cases, it ain't pretty (OK, not even close to pretty) but for those of us who take an interest in our health and our planet's health (or just wondered how that granola bar got to be a granola bar), it's a must-read.

Watchmen
by Alan Moore and David Gibbons
A graphic novel? Moi? Oh, no. Not me. I couldn't. I'm a literary type, you see.
OK. It turns out I can. And I did. After all the hullabuloo that came with the movie release, I couldn't help but be drawn to the original, first printing edition sitting on the BF's shelf (yes, that BF). And you know what? While the graphic novel genre isn't my usual terrain, it isn't half bad. For all the armchair philosophy and jarring violence, it's an exciting, imaginative read. And much, much better than the movie.
And if you're reading anything amazing right now, log in and let me know! Next on my hit list is Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh, but I'm definitely open to suggestions!
Happy Reading!
Jes
