About Emma, Rebecca & Mia
Want a sneak peek inside the sweetspot.ca world? From product launch parties to personal must-haves, Emma Yardley, Rebecca Burstein and Mia Shulman dish on why working here is so sweet.
The weddings are here, the weddings are here! Having been in full-on wedding mode for a few years now (four this year, 12 a few back – seriously, no lie) I consider myself a seasoned-pro and am here to help.
What to wear. Not as hard as it seems - as long as you’re wearing a dress that’s appropriate for the season (read: no wool in summer) you’re fine. Black tie is trickier without an arsenal of long gowns in the closet but even this can be worked out with a cocktail dress and the right accessories. (Try pearls, long gloves and a pair of sky-high heels – trust me).
How to accessorize. Just because it’s a ‘wedding’ doesn’t mean you have to change who you are. If you love chunky jewellery, wear it. If you love flats, wear them.
What to bring. A clutch and shawl. A shawl is easy to carry and will come in handy (to protect from the sun outside, AC inside as well as any
spills – you all know it happens). Filling a clutch properly is essential and takes practice. The good news is clutches these days can be BIG. I hit the jackpot with my recent buy as it holds everything I need without looking lumpy: lipgloss, mirror, bandaids, de-shiner, ID, phone and camera.
Think ahead. Wear sunscreen. Make an early trip to the random goodie basket in the bathroom (and take what you think you may need NOW). Drink water and lots of it – heat from outdoor weddings + open bar = not so fun the next day.
My best advice. Relax about your dress-choice; as long as you’re not upstaging the bride (very very hard to do) you’re fine. Shop for wedding season all year-round. If you see a dress on sale, or that you love, buy it. This will save you the agony of having a wedding coming up and nothing to wear. Don't wear shoes you know will keep you seated all night (pretty as they are). And last but so not least, pick up a Dr. Scholl's Friction Stick (read about it in this Thursday’s Cherry Picked – your feet will be happy you did).
