Hollywood Hair

ask an expert: red carpet lookscanada (Oct.02.09)

We're recreating star style with the man behind the looks (and face of Herbal Essence's Tousle Me Softly line), Charles Baker Strahan.

Leighton Meester: Leighton loves softness and imperfections in her hair.  She can take fashion risks because she has such natural beauty and she loves to explore different ways to express that.

Get her Emmy Look:

  •  Start with a half-inch barrel curling iron on moussed hair. Curl square sections (not perfectly square at the base) about an inch wide. Twist it down upon itself to add diffusion to the wave as it cools and then secured it with a roller clip.
  • Once hair is set, take a section at the nape of the neck and create a rope like twist by taking two large sections and loosely twisting each one in opposite directions to allow them to wrap upon each other. Work from the left side to the right, like you would a French braid - this builds the base and keeps it secure.
  • Create two more of these twists loosely on the side of the head. Work the side twists towards the back base twist, leaving out a few face framing tousles. Once the hair is parted, gently back-comb the remaining waves and work them softly through the twists and secure them with pins.

Whitney Port: Whitney likes to have an edge, but has a way of making her edge feminine. This style has one side of the head corn-rowed, and the other side rolled back and done very slickly for a fiercer look. I wanted to soften the look and make it somewhat more romantic by adding a little volume and wave (including a beautiful jeweled pin in the back.)

Get her MTV Video Awards Look:

  • Start by braiding hair in several loose braids and flat ironing them to add wave and texture.
  • Add a small mist of Spray Gel to provide hold and keep the texture dry.
  • With a 1/2 inch curling iron, wrap random pieces of hair around the barrel to add areas of wave and then create a cornrow to the left side of the head. (Tip: Keep cornrow sections slightly softer to prevent the scalp from showing.)
  • For the braid section, start at the temple, working your way down towards the ear and then to the middle point of the head. For the 'Roll' on the opposite side, roll the hair upwards from front to back to meet the braid on the opposite side. Use an elastic band to secure the pieces together and pin them in place.
  • Add a jeweled piece and secure the hair in a bun. You can add some fullness by backcombing large sections underneath to give the hair a pretty and voluminous roughness.
