Howard Barr, hair expert

hair carecanada (Mar.04.08)

I like to give my hair an oil treatment once in a while. I’ve heard ordinary oil does the same thing. Is this true?

Andree T. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our hair expert, Howard Barr answered:

I am making the assumption that by 'ordinary’ you are probably referring to some kind of cooking or baby oil. If one "all purpose" lubricant existed that could take care of all of our needs then life would surely be simplified. The truth is that when it comes to deep conditioning your hair, most non-specific oils are too thick to penetrate even the most porous hair type. The result is usually limp, greasy hair that won’t smell fresh or clean either.

John Freida's Frizz-Ease Restructuring Micro-Oil Therapy is a product made exclusively for hair that is over-processed, extremely damaged and lifeless. Unlike most household oils, it is formulated with keratin, amino-acids and ceramides. It also has a fine molecular structure allowing it to penetrate hair from root to tip, which will energize, repair and protect hair from chemical treatments and colouring.
