How should I change my skin care regime now that the weather is getting colder?
Jenny C. of Vancouver, BC emailed us at asktheexpert@sweetspot.ca; and our skin therapy expert, Holly Sherrard, answered:
When the weather gets colder, our skin tends to become more dehydrated and flaky due to the lack of humidity. Some people may also experience less naturally occurring oils due to this lack of moisture (as opposed to heat stimulating oil production). The barrier of the skin becomes compromised in colder, dryer weather and can lead to sensitization. The most important factor in changing a skin care regime for the cooler weather is to maintain hydration and protect the skin with lipids, silicones, and daylight protection.
Get assessed. Many products are available in differing consistencies and textures depending on what your current skin condition needs. A thorough skin analysis from a skin care professional will ensure the appropriate products are chosen.
Look at ingredients. Specialty products such as silicone-based protectants or balms rich in shea butter and evening primrose oil will help to replace lost lipids and build up the barrier function in the skin.
Always protect from the sun. Some people are under the impression that they do not need SPF in the winter months, but our skin is always exposed to daylight as long as the sun is hitting the earth. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum SPF of 15 or 30 to minimize the damage caused by daylight exposure.
