When you're responsible for a mane like Gisele Bündchen's, you're one hot hairstylist. Harry Josh took some time out of his busy schedule to tell us what's hot in hair for fall.
SweetLife: You just wrapped NY Fashion Week, what kind of hairstyles are you seeing for fall 2010?
Harry Josh: In essence, it’s really hard to keep things segregated. With the weeklies and blogs, the trends become public before they are shown on the runways – so the styles I was creating for New York Fashion Week have already been exposed. For example, I did something at BCBG for the fall runway show, and I ended up doing something very similar on Amanda Seyfried for the Oscars because she saw the style and liked it. It’s become a really hard area to navigate – knowing what’s for spring and what’s for fall.
That being said, I am seeing a lot of hair up. Tons of versions of hair up like I've never seen before. A lot of that stems from the clothing: we are seeing a lot of architectural shapes, big shoulder pads and asymmetry. We’re seeing a lot of weird silhouettes and hair can be very distracting from them when it’s down. Designers are all trying to find ways to showcase the necklines. This means tasking all hair stylists with different ways to put the hair up. We’re seeing a lot of messy undone buns. It’s all about learning how to tweak the gym bun for an evening dress.
There are three easy steps:
- Create a clean, extreme side part.
- Use hair pins to pull the hair back, no elastics.
- Rip the bun apart so you get the texturized look.
SL: Are you still seeing hair accessories?
HJ: Big time! They may even be bigger than last year. I think all the luxury brands have caught on, and are making more hair accessories. We keep seeing them on the red carpet. It’s a way to dress up your look – people don’t realize that those things can really make a big difference. Take your ordinary look to extraordinary.
SL: Anything else?
HJ: Besides the buns, the hair accessories, and a return to short hair (goodbye monster-long hair and extensions), I think that volume is back. If you look at the Chloe runway show, the Chloe ads, they have that luxuriously big hot-roller look. I think that's coming back big time.
