I am typically a highlighting girl and am looking to change my look for fall. What are the new trends in hair this fall? Howard BarrJasmina Z. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca: …and our hair expert, Howard Barr, answered:

Rich colour, luxurious texture and cropped hair define fall fashion. Enhance your hue, or, if you want to be more adventurous, try some of the exciting shorter shifts in hairstyle trends this season:

Rich Colour. I am seeing a trend in creating rich colours, the most common being brunette. This shade has become a popular look with my clients and many celebrities. Darkening hair tones can really make features pop out while giving your skin a very youthful fresh appearance. The key to this look is shine (a glaze will help keep colour rich, deep and shiny).

Luxurious Texture in Shorter Hair. Women are starting to move away from longer hair. Bobs of varying types are becoming "It”; lots with layers, some graduated into the nape, many left alluringly long enough at the front to tuck behind the ear, others enhanced by striking full or textured bangs. Many women are electing for heavily textured, deconstructed short cuts that need little or no maintenance with the exception of a little shine. All of these styles can be helped along with a little tone on tone colour on top of the darker shades mentioned previously, which will enhance the texture.
