We all wish we could have hair like Rapunzel, but somehow ours just never seems to grow. Here to give us some tips on keeping our mane healthy (and others green with envy) is Ken Paves, hairstylist to the stars....
What are your basic recommendations for hair care?
I would recommend people wash their hair less, like once a week. And when you do, you really have to massage the scalp so you lift up the natural oils and any styling debris or any environmental aspects off your hair. Rinse it really well (even for really fine hair) and then condition your hair from the mid-shaft down. It’s going to give your hair a really clean look and really clean smell, and your hair will be like silk. Within a month you’ll have hair you never thought you could, hair that even my conditioners (which are the best!) couldn’t repair, because the body repairs the body better than anything we could put on it.
Do things like avocado and salmon actually help your hair?
Avocado is really great because of the oils that are in it, and salmon is amazing; it has Omega 3. Anything that you put into your body affects your hair, your skin and your nails as well as the rest of your organs. Your hair and nails are made of keratinerized protein. When your eating habits change, the first change you’ll notice is in your hair. Eating amazing things like fish (I don’t eat things that are processed because of all the preservatives) are also really good for your hair. You’re right; avocado is amazing, olive oil is amazing, really anything that has great fatty acids and Omega 3 is the best.
Is there anything I can do to make my hair grow faster?
Absolutely; once again, growing out your hair is about diet. There are amazing products out there which can help. PHYTO has an amazing pill for your hair, and Kérastase has an amazing pill, both of which are full of vitamins. So many women have tried taking pre-natal vitamins, but I think that can be dangerous because you’re giving your body something it doesn’t need at that point. But once again, a really great diet and not abusing your hair is the greatest thing, and so simple.
