Is it really necessary to hand wash your bras? And if so, what’s the proper way to do it?
Elyse H. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca, and lingerie expert Jennifer Klein, answered;
Myth: If you machine wash your bras they will breakdown faster.
When we wear clothing against our skin, tiny particles of dirt, dry skin and oils rub into the garment creating a build up in the elastic that causes it to break down. Heat also contributes to elastic breakdown, which is why items with elastic in them should not go in the dryer. Our body is warm and without the constant refresher of a wash, it will take its toll on the life span of the elastic.
Bras should be washed every one to three wears and more in the summer when we are sweating heavily. This will protect your investment.
It is best to wash these delicate garments by hand. If you don't think you have time, use Soak. Soak takes the work out of hand washing. Simply soak your garments in the soapy water for 15 minutes and give a light rinse.
Secret Tips
- Colour match your bra to your outfit. If you wear black clothes over a white or beige bra, you will see that the dye from the clothing seeps into the bra.
- Wash your matching sets together so the top and bottom always stay the same colour. Often a panty gets washed more often and starts to fade in colour.
- Bras are not meant to be put in the machine. They will not live nearly as long. If they do go in the machine you must put them in a mesh hosiery bag on gentle and hang to dry.
