I have a bra with lace that I find very scratchy - is there anything I can do to soften it up?
Lucy N. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our lingerie expert, Liliana Mann answered:
It could be scratchy if it is inexpensive lace. Even expensive bras can sometimes be trimmed with less expensive laces. If you've invested a lot in the bra, or it's one of your favourite styles, then you may want to have a seamstress add a soft fabric lining to put some distance between your skin and the lace! You should be prepared to spend approximately $50.00 for this service.
It may be that your skin is sensitive to the fabric content of the lace (or lace in general). In this case I would recommend that you donate the bra (if it's in good condition) to a friend or a women's shelter as in this case, lining it will not solve the problem.
If it's a new bra, then it may simply need to be washed a few times in a delicate detergent like Forever New, to wash away the chemicals used during the fabrication process.
Remember, an expert bra-fitting will ensure that you find the right bras that not only fit perfectly, but feel comfortable too. Don't be tempted to buy based on price or style alone as those purchases tend to be very costly!
