Kelly Millar, fashion stylist

This year I’ve decided to commute to work on my bike. I’m a professional that likes to be a little edgy but all I can work with in terms of beauty and fashion must be carried in my messenger bag - any tips so I don’t continue to look so wrinkled and disheveled all day?

Jamie M. G. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our stylist, Kelly Millar, answered:

Think layers. These allow you to cool off or warm up as your body temperature adjusts. You can always pop off a layer at the traffic light on that early morning commute. Zips and buttons are best as pullovers will not be as readily slipped on or off.

Don't exclude those summer skirts and dresses. Dresses and skirts are actually perfect for summer cycling since you don't have to worry about fabric getting caught in chainrings - so ladies, don't rule them out! Opt for fabrics with a bit of stretch or light knits. For a more fitted skirt, make sure there is a slit in order to allow for mobility while cycling.

Roll your trouser leg or get a velcro strap. This ensures you avoid grease marks or torn trousers.

Wear stylish slim sneakers. They will give you that stylish edge while still being practical on the move. Either keep a selection of high heels at work or pack them in your bag for the day. You can also be daring and cycle in a low or kitten heeled shoe. It's not impossible!

Wear a light cotton layer close to your skin. If you need to wear a jacket for the commute, try a short sleeve light cotton layer over your cami to absorb perspiration while you cycle. Once at work you can slip it off and freshen up.

Tie your hair back. Whether your hair is short or long, it's best to tie or clip it back for your commute. Especially during warm, humid summer months, this will help maintain the style for when you arrive to work.

Wear brightly coloured accessories for visibility. Splash on a deep pink neck scarf or complete your outfit with a blend of vibrant bangles or metallic footwear. You'll be the ultimate 'visible' fashionable cyclist.
