I always buy my high-heeled stiletto sandals 1/2 size too big - works great as my feet swell. What should I do when the ball of my foot feels like I'm walking on the bone with no skin cushioning my foot?

Donna K. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our shoe expert, Ron White, answered:

This is an all too common problem and can escalate into serious foot problems if not managed effectively. What you're feeling are the metatarsal heads being overloaded and the natural 'fat pads' (this is the good fat) of your feet not being able to handle the increased pressure in this area from wearing the stiletto. The quick answer is to wear a lower heel. But with 'Sex and the City' still fresh in our minds and the highest of high heels being the hottest in fashion - how can we even jest at such a thought?!

Here are a few recommendations to help get you through the night in high-heel style:

Purchase Smiling Feet Shoe Inserts by Tana for the Ball of the Foot Cushions
(the Purple box). These gems will act as an additional 'fat pad' under your foot and will reduce the pain by adding more cushioning.  And (as if that weren't enough), these unique, washable, removable inserts are clear; so they even work with peep toes and strappy sandals.

Try one of my 'All Day Heels'.
They are a mix of multiple branded pumps ranging from the Cole Haan with NIKE air inserts as featured on Oprah, to shoes made in the Chanel factory that I've had doctored up by adding additional padding and support for all day wear. Not quite a stiletto height - but close.

Lastly, try to cleverly limit your high heel stiletto wear to when absolutely necessary.
If possible wear another shoe that allows the foot to be in a more relaxed position whilst being driven to and from your event.  It will help with circulation and add to your total 'wear' time once propped back up on your favourite spikes.
