I bought a relatively expensive bra recently and the underwire is already popping out. What should I do?
Jessica W. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our lingerie expert, Liliana Mann, answered:
Expensive or not, something like this shouldn’t happen (especially within a short period of time). Having said that, there are a few reasons behind this type of malfunction.
Wires can pop out due to:
a) A manufacturing defect
b) A bra cup that’s too small, which causes the bust to put pressure on the wire (have you gained weight; do you feel your bust is heavier?)
c) A style of bra that’s not suitable for your body type (your breast tissue may be too heavy for the construction of the bra which puts pressure on the wire)
d) Machine washing and/or drying, both a big NO NO!
For scenarios a) to c) I suggest that you take the bra back to the store, show them the problem and ask what are they prepared to do (exchange, replace, repair or credit).
For scenario d) I suggest that you go back to the store and find out if they can repair it (even if you have to pay for it) and then please, learn from this experience!
I recommend that you book a consultation once a year, before you shop for new bras. A professional bra-fitting that’s done properly ensures the styles you purchase will provide the right support. It’s important to note that even if you purchase the same style of bra you’ve been wearing, always try the new bra on before you buy it. Your body can change; even if your weight doesn't, you might be unaware of a subtle difference that can affect the way your bra fits. At the end of the day, you want to keep the girls happy and supported.
