How can I make the most of my wardrobe budget?

Jennifer G. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca, and Robin Keeler, Yorkdale Shopping Mall's Fashion Director answered:

In order to build a successful wardrobe, you need to lay a proper foundation by selecting simple separates that are easy to maintain and coordinate for a variety of looks. This process will save you time and money.

Before you shop:

  • Make a plan. Don’t go wandering aimlessly around the mall – you will only become overwhelmed and wear yourself out.
  • Know your size and body type.
  • Set a budget and stick to it.
  • Start a fashion file full of looks you like and want to recreate within your budget.

 When you shop:

  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Shop when you feel energized, not tired at the end of a day.
  • Buy the best quality you can afford.
  • Be open to alterations.

A capsule wardrobe is made up of 10 classic elements that work well with one another to create numerous outfit combinations. It is enough on its own or, depending on your budget, can serve as a great foundation on which to build your wardrobe.

Add a great pair of jeans and a leather or denim jacket to your capsule wardrobe. Quality accessories, shoes and bags will stretch your looks even further.
