As the cold weather fast approaches, I'm wondering what the protocol is for socks and flats. Can I continue wearing flats and skinny jeans in the fall? Do I wear socks as well? What can I do?
Andrea B. e-mailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our style expert, Kelly Millar, answered:
Fall is indeed here. As the weather becomes chillier, many women are wondering what to do with their beloved ballets and flats alike. So, to shed some light on flat shoe etiquette, here are my recommendations.
While brightly coloured and patterned tights and flats were popular on runways this season, the trend should be reserved for the under 30's. For women 30 and over, I would suggest a slightly more sophisticated look with flats such as matching coloured trouser socks or tights. Tone on tone is also chic with an edge (try a subtle pattern). For example, opt for jewel-toned magenta ballet flats combined with slightly lighter toned tights and black trousers.
The key is to be careful with the colour. You don't want your tights to overpower your flats; they should blend beautifully in a sleek, casual way.
So the good news is for all those flat shoe lovers; you can still wear your flats this fall and look fabulously up-to-the-moment stylish without freezing!
