I have knee problems, but I still want to work out. What are some good exercises that will keep me in shape but won’t put any additional stress on my knee?

Holly W. e-mailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our fitness expert, Larry Track answered:larry track

If you’re experiencing knee trouble, start by doing low impact cardio such as swimming or bike riding, or using an elliptical machine.  Always make sure to keep your knees behind your toes during your workout to ensure you don't damage them. You should also avoid doing step ups, squats and lunges.

If you want to strengthen your knees, try standing on a half-ball (such as a BOSU) and doing your exercises. You can stand on the ball and while doing your shoulder presses, for example. This will help you use your stabilizing muscles, and will strengthen the muscles around the knee while avoiding high impact stress.
