I work out to an exercise DVD. While the exercise is great and working out at home saves me tons of time, how do I know if I'm getting the most out of the workout? Do you have any other tips for following workout DVDs at home?
Karen M. e-mailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our fitness expert, Larry Track answered:
Working out at home is great since it saves you time and money! But you also always need to make sure you're getting the results you want, so you need to keep track of your progress as you train. You can measure your progress in several ways, but here are my top 5:
- Body weight
- Body Fat Percentage
- Your favourite skinny jeans (do they fit?)
- Strength Levels: Are you getting stronger? Are you able to do more repetitions?
- Satisfaction Level: Was it a good workout? Were you bored? Are you still pushing yourself or has muscle memory settled in and you don't feel the effects of the workout like you once did?
Just like when you're at the gym, you need to add a variety of exercises at home. Make sure to do different DVDs that work different muscle groups. You should also avoid doing the exact same workout more than twice a week. To see best results, change your routine every six weeks.
