Losin' It

treadmill questioncanada (May.27.09)

My goal for 2009 is to lose weight, and I plan on doing my cardio on the treadmill. Is it better (from an optimal fat-burning perspective) to use the preset fat burner workout option (using the handles to monitor my heart rate) or to increase my speed/incline manually over the period of my workout?

Natalie I. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca and our fitness expert, Larry Track answered:

The best method on the treadmill would be to use the Manual option. This will allow you to control the speed and incline as your heart rate rises or falls. Keep your heart rate within 60-80 per cent of your max heart rate to burn fat. Each time you train, try and overload your body with more work. For example; go a little faster, increase the incline or increase your length of workout. Good luck and stay on track!
