My house needs extensive work and I need to renovate to accommodate my growing family, but I just don't know where to start. Any tips?

Plan, plan, plan! I have a saying I tell all my clients: You can do it right or you can do it fast. It takes at least 2-3 months just to plan for a simple kitchen renovation. A good plan saves time and money and will get you the finished product you’ve been dreaming about.
Do your research. Read magazines and clip pictures of everything that you like - from room layouts to paint colours. Also, try to familiarize yourself with the construction process. It's important to understand the basics of construction as some of the most important work done to your home will be things that you don't really see, like plumbing, electrical and insulation. This understanding will go a long way in easing communication between you and your contractor (and trades people), which will ensure a smoother process.
Part of your research should include finding contractors and designers you feel comfortable with. Make sure to check references and see jobs they’ve recently completed.
Finally, try to choose and order as much of your materials as possible before the job even starts. You don't want to be halfway through and find out you have to wait weeks or months for something that's on back order - the ripple effect of one aspect of the job being delayed will affect the whole time frame and budget, most likely, in a negative manner.
