People I know are always getting free upgrades when they travel. Any tips or tricks for getting travel perks?

For many people, taking a vacation involves a great deal of research, planning and budgeting.
Travel is really just like any other large purchase. People want to feel like they are getting a great deal, a few perks, or a bit more than the next guy. Upgrades bring travellers a sense of accomplishment and can make a great trip even better.
Don’t be shy – just ask!:One of the best ways to get an upgrade on your flight, hotel room or vacation package is to simply ask if there are any better options available. It often just takes the request to achieve a better view, a quieter floor, a free breakfast or excursions free of charge. If you’re told there is nothing available at the time of booking, ask if you can check back closer to your departure date. And always ask at the airline ticket counter or hotel front desk when you get there.
Competitive intelligence: Do some comparison shopping to see what else is out there. ( At Travelzoo for example, experts determine the best deals and then include them in the Top 20 Travel Deals Newsletter.)
Be schedule-savvy: You may have a better shot at upgrades (and at receiving better upgrades) if you can be flexible with your travel dates. For example, travelling during shoulder seasons when there is greater availability can make it easier for hotels and airlines to offer up better accommodations. This is also a great way to be opportunistic with travel deals as they come out. Extra Tip: If it’s a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary, let people know – travel suppliers may jump at the chance to make it extra special.
Brand loyalty: Nothing helps your case for upgrades more than becoming a regular. As we know with frequent flyer points, consumer appreciation days and loyalty programs, companies want repeat customers. This being said, it’s always good to identify your first timer status so a hotel can make it a priority to ensure you have a great first impression.
Smile: It’s never fun dealing with an irate customer or someone who is overly demanding. You are more likely to get upgrades when you are courteous and appreciative and treat upgrades as a gift instead of a right.
