10 Things I Learned This Year

As the editor of our Ask an Expert column, with 312 expert posts under my belt, I've picked up a few tips and tricks over the years. Here are the top 10 things I learned in 2010:
- My mom always told me I should hand-wash my bras, but I never really believed her. Learning that heat causes elastic to break down made me realize that I was doing my lingerie a serious disservice by putting it in the washer and dryer.
- I never understood what the different types of eyeshadows were for — until Greg Wencel gave me the lowdown. Buy pigment powder. You can mix it with clear gloss and use it on your lips or on your face as blush; the options are endless.
- Keratin hair treatments use formaldehyde to push the keratin into the hair shaft. If you're considering having it done, do your homework first.
- It's totally normal to have a crush when you're in a long-term relationship. Totally 100 per cent normal.
- The idea of spending three months' salary on an engagement ring is a myth made up by the jewellery industry.
- Carmindy (from TLC's What Not to Wear) taught me to hold my mascara tube under hot water for five minutes. It reliquifies the mascara and helps it glide on easily.
- Acetone is not dangerous. In fact, it will actually help your manicure last longer.
- Spicy foods are natural appetite suppressants.
- If you twist your body to one side, you'll appear slimmer in photographs (according to Nigel Barker).
- Use a dark concealer on pimples to make them recede, and light concealer on under your eyes to make them pop.
From me to you, here's to a great 2010 and an even better 2011. Happy New Year!
