Alan Lee, photography expert

I'm getting married soon, and even though I've hired a good photographer I'm worried that my photos won't turn out well because I'm not very photogenic. Are there any tips or hints to posing so I can be sure that my photos will turn out well?

Megan F. e-mailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca; and our photography expert, Alan C Lee, answered:

A good photographer can help ensure you look your best on your wedding day, but there are a few things you can do to make their job a bit easier:
  • Talk it out
The first thing you should do is talk to your photographer about your concerns. We all have our insecurities that tend to be larger in our own mind than what everyone else sees. Your photographer may be able to offer some simple solutions to whatever it is that's worrying you.
  • Strike a pose
And then another and another. Hum Madonna's song "Vogue" in your head if you have to, but just make sure you're not standing rigid and awkward shot after shot. The more variety your photographer gets, the more likely something will turn out great. A little silliness can be helpful so break out your inner diva.
  • Work it
Watch how the fabulously famous strut their stuff on the red carpet. There’s a tried and true formula when it comes to posing for the camera and it goes something like this: Lift your chin slightly into the camera to avoid the double chin. Slim down by turning slightly sideways with your weight on your back foot. Holding your arms slightly away from your body helps keep the upper arm flab from flattening out. Pull the shoulders back, chest forward and slightly suck in the tummy. The key word in all this is "slightly."
And voilà! You're now ready for your wedding or the red carpet!
