Secret Service

keeping important information safecanada (Aug.12.09)

We know we can never be too careful when protecting our information, but just how careful do we need to be with our online shopping habit? Former CIA Agent Lindsay Moran popped into Toronto and answered all our questions...

It seems PINs are being stolen and credit cards are being copied more often. What can we do to protect ourselves from identity theft?

Identity theft is a big concern these days. As technology improves, so do the methods used by thieves to acquire information. There are some easy things people can do to help minimize the risk of identity theft:
  • Always use multiple passwords for your online accounts and change them frequently.
  • Change your PIN frequently.
  • When using an ATM, always shield the number pad as you enter in your code.
  • Clear the cache from your website browser. This deletes the history of websites visited to ensure no one can retrace your steps and/or break into email accounts or online banking.
Sometimes it is unavoidable to work in a public space, whether it is an airport or coffee shop. What can we do to protect our business information?

As more people spend time working in public spaces like coffee shops, restaurants and airport lounges, it is increasingly important to be aware of your surroundings. One quick tip is to choose a location that blocks viewers from looking over your shoulder – for example, position yourself with your back to the wall or tucked away in a corner. Another idea is to use technology to your advantage – privacy filters fit onto laptops and mobile devices blocking the side view of your screen. I wish I had one of these when I was in the CIA! Finally, when working in a public space, always be careful about what you say on your cell phone. It’s a good practice to avoid speaking about confidential matters on your mobile – you never know who could be listening.

Online shopping is the new trend, but how can you tell whether a site is secure and that your information is safe?

Being a mother of two young children, I love to shop online. It’s so much easier than shopping with the kids in tow and I can shop whenever I want; it’s really convenient for me. Maybe it’s my CIA training but I still thoroughly research every website I shop at before inputting my credit card information. Always look for security features or certificates from reputable companies to ensure the site is legitimate. Another way to ensure its validity is to follow-up with the customer service department over the phone. Remember to always check your banking statements at the end of each month and don’t be afraid to question any suspicious purchases – it never hurts to be too safe.
