I'm stuck on what to do for Valentine's Day this year. Do I even need to do something?
Elissa G. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca, and our etiquette expert Janet Watson answered;
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and we are being bombarded with advertisements for flowers and chocolates. But what if you have only been on two or three dates with your new amour? What are the expectations?
A New Love Interest
Don’t put undue pressure on a new relationship; keep things light. For example, mention Valentine’s Day is coming up and ask if he/she would like to do something together. Maybe catch a movie or go out for a casual dinner. If the answer is ‘yes’, a small gift is appropriate, such as a nice card (not too mushy…), a book by his/her favourite author or a single flower or small bouquet. Keep it under $20.
Together a Few Months
If you have been with your significant other for a few months, tickets to a sports event or a concert are both nice ideas. Expect to pay $50 to $100. Dining out is always appreciated but remember to book the restaurant well in advance of February 14th.
Long Term Relationship
For married couples or people who are in a long-term relationship, don’t just focus on February 14th. Spread Valentine’s Day throughout the year! For a gift this year, decide that from here on out, once a month, you’ll do something special and meaningful together. ‘Special’ and ‘meaningful’ doesn’t have to mean ‘expensive’.
You can cook a favourite meal together, go for a romantic walk under the stars, or recreate your first date. Hire a babysitter to watch the kids (if you have any) and enjoy an evening out.
If you are more of a traditionalist and money is not an issue, flowers, chocolates and jewellery are always a good idea. These gifts can range from free to thousands of dollars. You can display your creativity and present your partner with a unique gift that says, ‘I know you very well and I listen when you speak.’ Something like that is priceless!
