About Gabrielle Johnson

When shopping finally becomes an Olympic event, editor Gabrielle Johnson is pretty sure she’ll take home the gold medal for Canada – after inquiring about the availability of other colours (lilac? chartreuse?) and politely requesting a discount. Every week, she shares a glimpse into what’s on her style radar.

Velvet Goldmine

life/style t.o.: 6 luxe velvet pieces canada, Toronto (Nov.23.11)

It's time for a velvet revival, don't you think? The last time I fully embraced the lush, luxe fabric was back in the early 90s, when I discovered vintage shopping and acquired a few too many crushed velvet tops and dresses.

It may have taken me almost 20 years to get over the memories of that Courtney Love-inspired fashion phase, but I finally feel ready to wear velvet again — which is good, because there are tons of fabulous, modern velvet pieces in stores right this very minute and I'm eager to scoop them up. Here are six of my favourites:

The metal studs on this Topshop velvet dress ($220) help transform a sweet, girlish design into a cool, edgy piece. I'd pair this with ankle boots and bright tights for a modern take on the traditional holiday party look.

These ridiculously stunning Erdem velvet printed platform pumps (US $705) are definitely a splurge, but since I always think of purchases in terms of CPW — cost per wear — I'd say these babies are worth the investment. Plus, they're pretty enough to double as little works of art, which makes them almost a bargain.

I love the simplicity of this Zara grey velvet t-shirt ($30) — it's the perfect wear-with-everything piece. I'd dress it up with a silk maxi skirt in navy or Iwine, and dress it down with a pair of colourful skinny jeans and oversized chunky knit cardigan.

Since buying them a couple of months ago, I've noticed that my cobalt blue J. Brand jeans have become a total wardrobe staple. These black velvet J. Brand jeans ($230) are the perfect winter update — I can't wait to get my hands on them.

The subtle leopard print on this Lauren Merkin velvet bag ($210) is what initially caught my eye, but I'm also a fan of soft, slouchy shape and elegant chain strap. It also works as a clutch, which makes it ideal for the upcoming party season.

Speaking of parties, can someone please invite me to a fabulous soirée asap so that I have an excuse to buy this showstopping T by Alexander Wang velvet maxi skirt (US $315)? It creates a gorgeously long, lean silhouette and would look incredible with a simple tee or tank top.
