About Gabrielle Johnson
When shopping finally becomes an Olympic event, editor Gabrielle Johnson is pretty sure she’ll take home the gold medal for Canada – after inquiring about the availability of other colours (lilac? chartreuse?) and politely requesting a discount. Every week, she shares a glimpse into what’s on her style radar.
New Year's Fashion and Beauty Resolutions
life/style t.o.: 2012 resolutions canada, Toronto
(Jan.04.12)
Hello, 2012! One of my favourite things about starting a new year is the sense of possibility that accompanies it. The next 12 months are a blank slate, which makes it a great time to set goals for yourself. I always feel inspired when I listen to other people discuss their resolutions, so in the spirit of sharing, I've asked my fellow sweetspotters to divulge what they're hoping to achieve, style- and beauty-wise, this year. The first one's mine:

Save up for a serious watch
I've got a few fashion watches that I wear on rotation, but I'd like 2012 to be the year I invest in a beautiful, timeless (no pun intended) timepiece. I'm planning to cut down on frivolous impulse buys in order to save up for something I'll have forever.
Hermès Cape Cod PM Watch, price available upon request. Available at Hermès

Invest in the classics
After doing a massive overhaul of my wardrobe, my resolution for the year is to focus on purchasing a few classic pieces and abstaining from cheaper, trendy items (that inevitably end up at the bottom of my closet after only a couple wears). The first investment piece? These chic tuxedo pants. — Mia
Vince Tuxedo Pants, $310. Available at www.shopbop.com.

Become a makeup pro
I'm making a resolution to make better use of makeup (especially eye makeup). I think I’ll need to take a makeup application class, since I have never been much of a makeup person. — Jennifer
Smashbox Click You're It Eye Palette, $56. Available at www.sephora.com

Go bold with accessories
I tend to stick to smaller studs and fine gold-chain necklaces as accessories, but 2012 will be the year that I step it up on the jewellery front. — Jes
Dannijo Bianca Cuff Bracelet, $262. Available at www.ssense.com

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
I’ve been really bad with applying moisturizer, so my 2012 resolution is to stick to a schedule. Applying a good cream morning and night will definitely help my skin look its best (now and 20 years down the road). — Samantha
L'Occitane en Provence Shea Butter Ultra Rich Face Cream, $46. Available at www.ca.loccitane.com

Find the perfect lipstick shade
This year, I’ll be prepping my pout to pull off some brand new lipstick. After I hunt down the perfect shade (or two), I vow to let my lips stand out more often. – Rebecca
M.A.C. Lipstick in Scarlet Ibis, $18. Available at www.maccosmetics.com

Plan my office outfits the night before
This is something I used to do when I first moved to Toronto three years ago. But with post-work exhaustion and late evening events, it’s fallen by the wayside. Putting a little effort into my ensemble the night before always puts a spring in my step the next morning – and gives me five more minutes in bed. — Emma
Ever Concept Velvet Hangers, $35. Available at www.theshoppingchannel.com
