Guy Gifting

price of love canada (Dec.08.09)

While gifting for guys can pose quite the conundrum it can also be quite fun! First question: To give or not to give? Second question: What to give and what not to give? The answers to these pivotal questions depend on how defined your relationship is, and if any gifts have been exchanged yet.

Here’s my take on giving and receiving this Holiday Season.

Undefined Relationship:
If you’re in a situation that looks like it could be destined for a relationship, but has yet to be defined, you’ll want to have a “just in case” or a “casual” gift on hand. If he gets you something, or makes an effort to take you out for a nice dinner, have something on-hand in case it feels right.

A good vintage (provided he likes his wine). One of my faves is the Tedeschi Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico. Retails for $39.95 at the LCBO. Package it up with a cute fabric gift bag and some dark chocolate. (Hopefully he likes to share!)
A pair of fun striped socks and/or a striped scarf. Visit the men’s department at Holt Renfrew, pop into Harry Rosen or a chic men’s boutique like Gotstyle, you’ll be sure to find something fun and unique. Total gift will cost anywhere between $40-$100.

Defined relationship, first gift exchange:
So, you’re officially committed, but neither of you has had a birthday during the course of the relationship. You’ll want to choose something that’s personal enough, but not over the top.

A great shirt – something to wear for brunch, or to the movies. There are many edgy brands out there today for guys, so if you have a guy that appreciates style, you can have fun with this one. Apolis Activism, Energie and Diesel … all offer casually stylish options starting from about $69.
If your guy is a little more on the jock side of style, he’ll likely appreciate something more sporty like a hoodie from Lululemon or Nike. Fill the package with some immune-boosting energy like a tube of EBOOST. He’ll know you care about his insides as well as his outer appearance!

Defined relationship, repeat gifter:
Whether you’re in a new-ish relationship or a long-term marriage, and even if your guy is dying for a new power tool, I suggest also buying him something that is more personal, that he’d only get from you.

You know the scents he likes and you know what you like to smell on him (and what you like remaining on you and your sheets!) Tom Ford has some great new scents. A couple of my faves are Oud Wood and Vanilla Tobacco.
If you want to do something totally personal, you can fill an iPod with a playlist of music you know he’ll love (complete with some tunes that will remind him of you). Top it off with an iPod docking station or great speakers.

Whatever you gift your guy with this season, make sure you’ve put some thought into it, and if he’s into you, he’ll love it no matter what.
