New Year's Adam

price of love canada (Dec.29.09)

If you’re in an undefined relationship, New Year’s Eve can be one of the most unsettling dates to plan around.

As a kid, New Year’s Eve was magical. What could be better than staying up past midnight to watch the Dick Clark countdown, the Ball dropping in Times Square, whilst warm and cosy in front of a fire, sipping ginger ale from a champagne flute? (my parents were great at making us kids feel like we were part of the action!)

As I got older, NYE, along with most other things in life, sadly lost some of it’s luster while becoming much more complicated. (Sometimes to the point that I’ve dreaded it.) Call me crazy, but nothing appeals to me about being outside in sleet and salty slush (ruining fabulous shoes!) not being able to get a cab… nevermind the risk of not having New Year’s Kiss! (In years past, this was an actual concern of mine, but I’m much less consumed with such thoughts these days)

My worst (and most self-depreciatingly comical) New Year’s Eve was spent alone, with the flu, cat-sitting at my mother’s condo while she was in Las Vegas, watching Dick Clark (hoping he would replace the absence of my Mommy) . During a commercial break at 11:55, I decided to be productive and clean the cat litter. At midnight I realized the flushable cat litter I grew up with had been replaced by stuff you need to put down the garbage chute!) and yes, the toilet overflowed and I was plunging it as the clock struck twelve. (I would have taken turning into a pumpkin over plunging a toilet any day!)

Then, as I saw a “3” at the beginning of my age, I would see NYE approaching and was vividly reminded that while I was sipping “fizzy pop” at midnight, my parents were younger than I was now. And, I started to see each year that passed as a reminder that I was still single. (Another New Year’s Eve without my Adam.)

These days when the holidays roll around, I focus on appreciating the moment and all of my blessings. When I think about how I want my future to be, I prepare for it by expecting that what I want one day will happen and trust that it will. And, I know that some day I will miss these days (just like I sometimes miss my childhood days) so I remember how precious these moments are, and how they shape a lifetime.

What does New Year’s Eve mean to you?
What are some of your best and worst New Year’s memories?
