Proud. Electric. Wow. This post is dedicated to a special relationship we all share as Canadians.

On Sunday night, when our men's hockey team won the gold, I felt connected to every Canadian out there. Technology (thanks BBM, texting, Facebook and more) offers us something remarkable, letting us celebrate on another level (and enhancing the energy for miles).

The 2010 Canadian Olympians broke records with 14 gold medals. The men’s hockey win cemented the record, giving everyone a huge reason to celebrate and showcase our (usually closeted) patriotism to the world.

Even those that don’t follow hockey were out cheering on our nation. We let loose, bonding with strangers we wouldn’t normally look in the eye, making noises and gestures we may only let out while (very drunk) on vacation, acting carefree, alive and victorious.

After just returning from a fabulous girls’ trip (which I'll share next week) to a weekend of birthday celebrations and unprecedented Olympic achievements, my sense of re-energized Canadian pride actually began while I was away.

Guys from many nationalities commented on how unique Canadian women are (in flattering ways – and I refuse to believe they were using these as pick-up lines). According to them, we are down-to-earth and humble, worldly and strong; we care about our appearance while being warm and real, polished and classy, yet quirky and fun-loving in our own unique way. They also pointed out that we have the refreshing ability to laugh at ourselves.

As a country we have displayed these qualities to the world time and again, and the 2010 Olympic Games have let us shine brighter than ever.

As with anything in life, when we set our sights high and focus on achieving the best outcome possible, the ride becomes more enjoyable with a few detours along the way, and the final destination becomes all the more satisfying. So, while the stress of the men’s hockey final was almost unbearable at times, the outcome was much more exciting and fulfilling than it would have been if we had glided into the end of the game without a detour.

To those at sea, oh Canadian, I am proud to be.

Share how you feel about being Canadian after the Olympics!
