Girl Trippin'

Jenn Price canada (Mar.09.10)

I recently had one of the best girls’ trips of my life. My gal pals were easygoing, confident, supportive of one another and a ton of fun. It’s refreshing and reassuring to be able to travel well with friends as you learn so much about people when you’re away from home. 99% of the time we all got along swimmingly (the other 1% added a bit of spice to the trip, ultimately making the friendships stronger, more akin to sisterhood).

The dynamic of this particular group was exceptionally good, with two being single, one engaged and one married. It was ideal for the single girls, as we had two designated wing women everywhere we went. And it was fun for the taken ones who got to live vicariously.

Our destination of choice was Miami’s South Beach for 5 intoxicating nights (literally). Whether we were dining at Mr. Chow or Scarpetta, dancing it up at Louis, Coco de Ville or SET, or strolling down Lincoln Rd or the Boardwalk, the taken ladies chatted up the guys on behalf of the single girls and noted when we were being noticed. (I don’t know what it is about being out of Toronto, but guys in other cities and countries definitely do a lot more overt noticing than the guys at home.)

Pre-trip, we ate well and worked out consistently (or tried to) in order to be ready for bikinis and cute outfits. I even experimented with something new called Fit Wraps (a localized detoxification wrap that helps to tone and lose inches – it helped me to stay lean despite over-indulging in nightly rounds of cocktails and limited workouts) And although we only had one true day of bikini-worthy weather, just being outside amongst palm trees, sunshine and plus-temperature breezes made the trip relaxing (and we all came back with a healthy sunny glow).

Despite the let-down of the interior of the condo we had rented (which was a classic case of bait and switch, complete with a welcoming “Frankie the Singing Fish” on the kitchen wall), we all savoured every moment of our special girl time. We laughed, cried, hiccupped and just purely appreciated being together. (So much so that we are going to make this an annual trip!)

It’s so important to have female bonding time regardless of the stage of “relationshiphood” we’re in. I like to say it’s about being self-full, rather than self-ish. Solid friendships will always be there regardless of the curve balls life throws our way, and that’s the real sweet spot in life. The male attention was a bonus… our cherry on top.

What kind of things do you do to make sure you nurture your friendships?
