Travel Time

price of love canada (Jul.27.10)

I love travelling. I’ve had the opportunity to travel for business, with girlfriends and even solo. Jet-setting independently can be liberating and quite enjoyable (if you’re in the right head space). While exploring the streets of Paris, London, Positano and Barcelona, I’ve happily had my own internal dialogue complete with inside jokes that no one else would ever understand. While it’s something I’m happy I’ve done, I don’t crave doing it again. I now look forward to exploring the world with that special someone by my side (and in the seat next to me).

While escaping the everyday and travelling as a couple can be fun, it can also be stressful. You're suddenly shacked up with someone in an unfamiliar environment, which can create a sense of vulnerability. It can either strengthen your relationship or leave you single.

If travel is something a couple wants to experience together, I think it’s great to talk about places that are inspiring and create a bucket list of must-sees and things you’d like to experience together.

I say keep the first journey simple. A road trip to local wine country or a short flight to a nearby city is a great way to test the waters. Making sure you’re on the same page with what you want to do or see is key, but don’t over-schedule things. Leave time to wander and to let the journey evolve.

Make sure there’s a level of comfort for both of you in where you’re going. If he’s an avid camper and you have a fear of sleeping in tents, it won't work. Let him leave the wooded retreats for his guys’ getaways. (If you stick together, there will be plenty of years for compromise and to embrace things that your partner enjoys.)

The main thing is that you’re together, experiencing new things and letting different parts of you unfold. The "firsts" in relationships are special. Without even knowing it, you could be creating memories and your own inside jokes that you’ll reflect upon as years pass, and perhaps stories that you’ll share with your grandchildren one day. Buckle up and enjoy!
